Returning to familiar places can have a profound affect. It can conjure memories of the past and provide a feeling of stability in an ever-unstable world. These familiar places allow people to establish an identity for themselves; a place can tell us much about the people who call it home.
In a time when many people are returning home to start over, I am looking at events and occurrences that are considered commonplace to me and what about them defines my familiar places as home. Like language, we cannot always remove ourselves and look objectively at what is familiar to us. But upon returning after an extended absence, I can investigate the signifiers that allow for my familiar places to establish a language of place.
